“Toro Rosso“ means “Red Bull“ in English, which automatically clarifies the ownership rights of the former Minardi Team. The Austrian Energy Drink producer Red Bull is the decision maker at the Scuderia since 2006 – since the end of 2008 it even is the sole owner, since Gerhard Berger gave up his 50% share.
The basic aim of Toro Rosso originally was to give the young and talented newcomer Red Bull squad the chance to enter Formula 1 and gather experience in their apprentice year and finally reach the necessary fine tuning. In the mean time this tactic has been modified, the team wants to establish itself as fierce competition to the other teams in the champions’ league of motor sports. In comparison to its big brother the resources are relatively limited. Former Ferrari member Giorgio Ascanelli is responsible for the technical aspects.
Since 2010 Toro Rosso is operating independently of its big brother Red Bull, because the legislation does not allow customer teams anymore. As a result the factory in Faenza had to be expanded in space and employment in 2009 and 2010. Until that time the parts were produced in Faenza, but the design took place at Red Bull in Milton Keynes.
By the way: Paul Stoddart and Gian Carlo Minardi are not the key people that rule Scuderia Toro Rosso, but it is rather the Austrain Franz Tost. The former head of logistics at BMW was personally chosen by Dietrich Mateschitz as the new head of the team. What are Tost’s aims? “In a couple of years we want to be in direct competition with the top teams”. This was his first comment after the original inauguration in 2006.
Said and done: in 2008 the team reached its first sensational victory with Sebastian Vettel at the rainy race in Monza.
