With this model the old name “Kadett” was revived. Already before the break out of the Second World War, the Opel Kadett was produced in Russelsheim from 1936 until 1940.
In 1957 Dr. Karl Stief (Chief Opel constructor from 1934 until 1959) received the order from the General Motors US headquarters to construct a”perfect anti VW“. Stief, his assistant Hans Mersheimer (body engineering) and Wener K. Strobel (engine and suspension development) secretly pursued the research and development work in such an effective way that hardly anything has surfaced, concerning the development history of the Kadett A. Only when the new Opel plant was built in Bochum in 1960, the public was informed that Opel was working on a new small car, which would go on sale in the middle of 1962 for a retail price of 5075,- DM (L version: 5525,- DM).
The Kadett had a very modern construction with respect to the market leader VW Beetle. Especially the body design gave the Opel the greatest advantage over the Beetle. The interior offered more space for the passengers, a better sight and a larger trunk. The water cooled Kadett, in comparison to his air cooled competitor, had a perfectly working heating. The performance matched with lower fuel consumption was also superior to the ones of the Beetle. The acceleration was done by a vertically integrated engine and a four speed manual with mid shifting to the rear frame articulation axle. The single hanging front wheels have a horizontal leafed suspension as well. The very large hydraulic braking system with drum brakes in the front and rear resulted in sufficient braking results, even without brake booster support, at low pedal power usage.
