In 1951, the Hanomag R 28 was presented to the general public at the DLG exhibition in Frankfurt. Its four-cylinder 2.8 l diesel engine produced 28 HP. Owing to its strength, the Hanomag R 28 was already one of the larger tractors. New to this model was a five-speed gearbox that could be equipped upon request with the same number of crawling speeds. Initially, two variations of the R 28 were offered: an all-purpose tractor with spoked wheels and narrow section tyres (R 28 A) and a standard tractor with disc wheels and wider low section tyres (R 28 B). Tractor sales dropped rapidly towards the late Sixties and early Seventies. Therefore, in 1971 the Rheinstahl Group decided to discontinue tractor production, and consequently one of the oldest-established lines of business at Hanomag was shut down.
